See, the rise of eSports and its importance.

eSports are currently a modality that is gaining more and more space in the entertainment industry.

Let’s understand how such a “young” form of entertainment has achieved such strength in recent decades.

What are eSports?

eSports or Electronic Sports refer to electronic game competitions made up of professional players, most of the time hired by large teams, responsible for providing all the quality of life necessary for them to reach their maximum potential. These competitions operate very similarly to traditional sports, even having knockout systems at the end of championships, as happens, for example, in Football.

Electronic games or video games are a type of entertainment/sport that can be practiced without the need to perform physical exercises, but requiring a lot of intelligence, skill and strategy, which in turn brings several benefits, including improved logical reasoning and greater ease of understanding.

How did it start?

Having emerged around the 1970s, electronic games were much simpler and different than they are today. As the internet connection was still in its infancy, electronic games were completely offline (a term used to say that something is turned off or disconnected from the internet), that is, they were played by just one person competing against the machine itself, commonly called by gamers “ NPC, BOT or CPU Player.”

The first game development technologies arrived in the country around the 1980s. Over time, some companies began to create their own games, and it is worth mentioning “Aeroporto 83” created by Renato Degiovani in 1983 , a game that is considered the first electronic game produced in Brazil.

Around the 1990s and early 2000s there was huge prejudice against people who liked video games, and they could be categorized as antisocial, which would later come to receive the title “nerd”, in the sense of being someone who stays in their room. all day doing nothing or not going out to “enjoy life”, etc… A term that is currently only described as “people who are excessively interested in a certain subject and have slight difficulty interacting.”

With the increasing evolution of the internet over the years, it didn’t take long for games to catch on and become Online (Connected to the Internet). In Online games, the player competes against other people or players, opponents over the internet. Currently, Brazil is one of the countries that consume the most video games in the world, occupying third place in the global ranking with 95 million players, second only to China and the United States.

“The largest form of entertainment in the world is gaming, which generated more than US$160 billion in 2019 and is growing at a galloping pace following the pandemic, and is expected to reach US$200 billion in 2021” – Said  Thomas Felsberg,  Lawyer and Brazilian lawyer, founding partner of Felsberg Advogados, a global reference in the field.

Purpose of electronic sports.

The competitions are mostly organized by the companies that own and develop the games themselves, the objective is to expose the game to as many people as possible, attracting more players and at the same time creating a strong community of fans. The competitions have a complete bracket system including Group Stage, Playoffs, Semi-Final and Grand Final.

In addition to having surprising prizes, some reaching around 40 million dollars (approximately 202 million reais), as in the case of the “The International 10” championship, from the famous MOBA game, Dota 2, held in 2021.

Professional players and teams.

With so much money involved, it was a matter of time before the eSports scene began to become professional. Championships with small teams competing in their free time, often for pure fun, have become gigantic tournaments, with huge audiences and the participation of renowned teams from all over the world.

The term professional player applies to someone who plays for a competition organization, very similar to what happens with football players who play for their clubs.

Professional eSports players, for the most part, have contracts and salaries, as well as housing, and everything necessary so they can follow their training routines and game schedule.
