AI for Cell Phones and PCs, Qualcomm announces news at MWC 2024.

Tools and applications based on generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) for cell phones and Windows computers should reach users more quickly. At least that is the proposal of the Qualcomm AI Hub, announced this Monday (26) during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) fair.

The Qualcomm AI Hub should offer AI tools so that developers can make better use of hardware . The new feature is available starting today for products equipped with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and  Snapdragon X Elite, focused on Windows computers .

  • Find out more:  Qualcomm announces Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 with generative AI for cell phones.

As Durga Malladi, senior vice president and general manager of technology planning and edge solutions at Qualcomm, explains,  AI Hub is a library available to developers with pre-optimized language models . From there, the expectation is that the work of developing new solutions and applications based on AI will be facilitated.

Qualcomm’s AI library  has more than 75 language models to work, for example, on cell phones, tablets and computers  that use the company’s chipsets . Furthermore, these new features can be integrated into vehicles, connected smart devices and products focused on mixed reality.

The models will also be available on GitHub and Hugging Face. And Qualcomm promises that new models will be added to the AI Hub in the future. They are divided into categories such as:

  • Image generation;

  • Image segmentation;

  • Image classification;

  • Text generation;

  • Object detection;

  • Super Resolution;

  • Improvements for photographs in low-light locations;

  • More natural language understanding.

Models such as Stable Diffusion , Whisper, ControlNet and Baichuan 7B stand out  . They should consume less memory and power, in addition to taking advantage of “hardware acceleration across all Qualcomm AI Engine cores (NPU, CPU and GPU).”

Android phones with more powerful AIs

Also at MWC 2024, Qualcomm announced that the large multimodal model (LMM) LLaVA (Large Language and Vision Assistant) is now coming to Android devices. It has 7 billion parameters and  works, at the same time, with text, voice and image data .

In a demonstration, the company displayed an Android cell phone using LLaVA as a virtual assistant. The company simulates sending a photograph of some ingredients to the assistant and asks him to recognize them, and then asks for help to create a dish with what is available. The assistant returns information in text and gives tips on what to cook with the ingredients recognized in the image, in addition to providing caloric data in the same conversation.

Another tool that could gain momentum on high-end Android devices is AI imaging. Qualcomm showed off the Low Rank Adaptation (LoRA) method running on a device when running Stable Diffusion.

Working with more than 1 billion parameters, it is capable of generating high-quality images in less time, in addition to customizing creations based on the user’s personal and artistic preferences. It can also be run directly from devices.
